So, you don't have a lot to spend on your lodging bill... Well, who does? Spending little does not mean you have to stay miles away from the South Side, and major attractions. You may even consider options right along, or only a few steps away from world-famous beaches like Ipanema and Copacabana!

Staying in an economy-priced hotel does not mean you have to compromise on comfort either. Your choices include hotels with a beach view, properties where facilities include a pool, fitness center, sauna... OK, maybe not everything at the same time, but all you have to do is set your priorities straight. 

There are important factors to keep in mind if you are on a limited budget. The first is that our hotel rates are quoted per room, prices are usually the same for single or double occupancy. This means that if you have a travel companion to share expenses with, you will save as much as 50% on your lodging bill.

The second is that Carnival and New Year's are the highest seasons in Rio. During these periods hotels offer their rooms in pre-payable packages with a minimum number of mandatory nights, and rates are much higher. Book as early as you can, as best-priced values go very fast.

We were picky with our selection. All hotels listed on this page are located less than five minutes on foot from the beach. They offer rooms with a private bathroom,  air conditioning, phone, TV with cable channels, mini-bar and safety box. Air-conditioning, for instance, could be mistaken for a luxury... until you realize the temperature in the summer may easily climb to 40° C (104 F)!

Each of these hotels has at least one kind of room priced under US$70 + tax per night with twin or double occupancy (2 guests).  Breakfast is included in most rates.
